Ocean Heal Me

Ocean Heal Me

Ocean heal my wounds
Let your waves curl and foam on my body
Wash away blood, heal scars

Ocean renew me with your power
As unceasingly you roll
Giving strength that’s been drained

Ocean keep me warm
Wrap me in your brine
Caress me with your tides

Ocean disperse my tears
As they flow in you
I cleanse my soul

Ocean let me grow in your depths
Color me vibrant blue, coral, green
Clear = revitalized

Ocean your spray anoints me
Cool and refreshed
My spiritual renewal

Ocean be my friend
Hold me flowing in your currents
Ever moving, ever changing

Ocean, heal me.

Seashore Haiku - Poetry and Nature Combined

Filed under: ocean on Wednesday, July 2nd, 2008 by admin | No Comments

Haiku is a centuries old Japanese form of poetry that uses just a few words to capture the essence of its subject. Woods, forests, and oceans have been topics traditionally used by haiku poets and for good reason - they are all inspiring natural phenomena.

Seashore haiku combine both the love of the ocean and haiku’s inherent ability to portray nature subjects. For example, take a look at this seashore haiku by the author:

Early fall morning –
Only footprints
On the beach

Notice how the mood or ambiance of this poem is set in the first line. Here we know the time of year it is. We also know the time of day. Now, from this macro viewpoint comes something micro - something in particularthe description of footprints on the beach. Together, this haiku poem creates something called an absolute metaphor. We get a glimpse or feeling for the time of year, then we hone in on something very specific. Read as a complete poem, the mind must make a leap from “fall morning” to “footprints on the beach.”

Haiku accomplishes this brilliantly! And in only a few words. A remarkable match between economy and meaning; just like nature itself!

Here’s another seashore haiku:

Hot June day –
An otter
Slips into the sea

The thing about haiku is that if it’s done right, it’s supposed to put you in a trance state. That is, the “aha” moment or “ah” moment as I like to call it comes from the juxtaposition between line 1 and lines 2 and 3. This is not a koan (a question with no real answer) but a series of images that create a snapshot of a feeling or mood for the reader.

These brief poems are a perfect match for describing a nature scene.

The Man in the Looking Glass! The Conquering Hero!

Filed under: ocean on Tuesday, June 10th, 2008 by admin | No Comments

As the bright yellow sun
climbs over the mountains
and winks at the green valley below,
blue children play among the flowers.

As I float peacefully on a calm blue sea,
enjoying the starlight
dancing all around me!

Rainbow creatures poke
their heads’ above the water,
and gaze at me adoringly.

But do they see the real me?
or do they only skim the surface
like a dog sniffing a bone?

Seeing the face in the mirror
but not the one standing here alone!

When the face in the mirror is mistaken
for the one gazing into the mirror,
it’s time to smash the mirror
and SET THE REAL MAN FREE!

I’m so different now,
that when I look back
on the person I used to be,
that person seems like a dream!

It’s like a butterfly
looking back at its former life as a caterpillar,
crawling along the ground like a grub
when now it can fly!

I feel sorry for that person,
sometimes I feel joy, sometime I feel shame!

Sometimes I have to shake my head
in disbelief, at some of the crazy things
that person was willing to do
to obtain “love” from others!

That was before I discovered that I’m the conquering Hero
he was SEEKING TO LOVE HIM ALL THE TIME!
